The Barba Group's heritage of excellence

Our story begins in 1920 with Pascaline, our great-great-grandmother, who sold fish from the port of Valras to the halles de Béziers. This family passion has been passed down through five generations, transforming a local sales company into a leading seafood processing group.

The 1990s marked a decisive turning point in our development. Our move to Sète, the leading fishing port in the Mediterranean, enabled us to become France's biggest player in bluefin tuna. This period was also marked by our first export to Japan, where technicians came to pass on their precious cutting know-how.

In 2017, the inauguration of our new plant in Béziers, equipped with the largest -60°C storage chamber in France, marked a new stage in our development, confirming our position as a leader in the seafood processing sector.

Leadership in marine transformation

Our new 6,000 m² plant in Béziers, the fruit of an 8 million euro investment, represents the culmination of our industrial vision. This state-of-the-art infrastructure enables us to achieve storage capacities unrivalled in France, with 400 tonnes at -60°C and 2,000 tonnes at -25°C.

Our processing expertise is evident in several key areas:

  • Production of -60°C sashimi
  • Processing of cephalopods in brine
  • Just-in-time production

Our annual growth reflects the relevance of our diversification strategy. We now market 8,500 tonnes of finished products a year.

Innovation remains at the heart of our development. We are particularly proud to have obtained the first European sanitary approval for sea cucumbers, opening up new prospects for the Asian market. In addition, our subsidiary Barba Stock Log optimizes our logistics.

In our facilities in France and Spain, we ensure total control of our production chain, guaranteeing consistent quality and optimum responsiveness to our customers' needs.

The Barba Group's international reach is illustrated by our strategic presence on world markets. Our production subsidiary in Barcelona employs 25 people, testifying to our solid roots in Southern Europe.

Our expertise in international trading is particularly evident in tuna and swordfish. In 2021, we handled 400 containers from the Indian Ocean, demonstrating our ability to operate on a large scale in global markets.

Our international ambitions are also reflected in new strategic partnerships, notably in Hong Kong, where we are developing our presence with a measured but determined approach. Our strategy is to capitalize on our recognized expertise in tuna to develop our swordfish and cephalopod activities.

To support this international expansion, we have created Barba Stocklog, a division specialized in logistics services. This innovative service includes :

  • customized order preparation ;
  • computerized inventory management
  • coordination of international shipments;
  • real-time order tracking.

Faced with the current challenges of global supply chains, particularly in the Red Sea, we have developed tailored solutions to guarantee the continuity of our services and maintain our position as a major player in the seafood sector.

Conclusion

The future of the Barba Group is being written on the international stage, driven by our unique expertise and capacity for innovation. Our growing presence on world markets, supported by our Barba Stocklog division, enables us to bring our French know-how to every corner of the globe, while remaining true to the family values that have made us successful for five generations.
